India Arrests Rights Activist

NEW DELHI—Authorities are holding in custody an Indian activist known for her yearslong efforts to bring legal action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 Hindu-Muslim riots in Gujarat when he was the state’s chief minister.

Gujarat state police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad detained Teesta Setalvad, 60 years old, on Saturday afternoon at her home in Mumbai, in neighboring Maharashtra state. She was soon after arrested and taken to Ahmedabad, near Gujarat’s capital.
