Russian Strike On Kyiv Kills One, Injures Six Ahead Ahead Of G-7 Summit

A Russian missile strike on an apartment building in Kyiv on Sunday killed one civilian and injured another six, Ukranian officials said Sunday, a deadly attack that Mayor Vitali Klitschko called an act of “symbolic aggression” as Group of Seven leaders meet in Germany to discuss the war.

Key Facts

One of multiple missiles launched into Kyiv early Sunday hit an eight-story apartment building, killing one and injuring six, including a 7-year-old girl who had to be pulled out of the rubble, Ukrainian officials said.

Another Russian missile landed on the playground of a nearby kindergarten that was empty at the time of the attack, according to Ukrainian media.

More than 220 apartment buildings in Kyiv have been destroyed by Russian attacks, Klitschko said.

Klitschko told AFP the last major attack on Kyiv coincided with a visit from General Secretary of the United Nations António Guterres in April, saying that he believes the strike on the apartment building Sunday was also “a symbolic attack.”

The attack occurred just hours before leaders from the Group of Seven–the world’s richest democracies–gathered in Germany and just days ahead of a NATO summit in Spain that’s set to begin Tuesday, where leaders will discuss the war in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden, who will take part in both summits this week, called the Sunday attack “more of [Russia’s]

barbarism,” according to Reuters.

Key Background

At least 4,677 Ukrainian civilians have been killed and 5,829 injured, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said Friday. Last month, the agency’s Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine warned that the civilian death toll is likely much higher than the official figures of casualties that have been corroborated. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied targeting civilians in Ukraine.
