Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, is set to be questioned by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack.
Ginni Thomas’ lawyer, Mark Paoletta, confirmed in a statement to several news outlets that she will attend the voluntary interview following months of calls for her to testify under oath about what she knew about attempts to overturn the 2020 Election results.
“As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas is eager to answer the Committee’s questions to clear up any misconceptions about her work relating to the 2020 election,” Paoletta said. “She looks forward to that opportunity.”
Ginni Thomas has faced scrutiny for a series of texts she sent to Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, urging him to prevent Joe Biden from becoming president while calling the 2020 election the “greatest Heist of our History.”
There have also been calls for Thomas to reveal her communications with Trump lawyer John Eastman, who is said to have allegedly orchestrated the plot to pressure former Vice President Mike Pence not to certify the 2020 election results in Congress on January 6, despite knowing such a tactic would be illegal.
She also emailed more than two dozen Arizona lawmakers in November and December 2020 urging them to “choose” presidential electors who would declare Trump the winner in the state over Biden.
Below, Newsweek has compiled some questions which the January 6 panel may ask Thomas as part of its probe into the events which led up to the Capitol riot.
What Do You Know of Trump/John Eastman’s Jan 6 Plans?
The House select committee investigating January 6 tried to seek testimony from Thomas after it emerged she was in communications with Eastman, one of the central figures in Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 Election.
It is unclear what the pair were talking about, but the panel were concerned that it showed how central Ginni Thomas was to the plan to stop Joe Biden becoming president.
Eastman is alleged to have also been part of the plan to install an alternate slate of electors who would dispute the election results, which Pence could cite to send the election to the House of Representatives or delay the certification of Biden.
Thomas has admitted to being part of the “stop the steal” protests in Washington, D.C. on January 6 2021, but left before the violence at the Capitol broke out.
Did You Tell Eastman About A ‘Heated Fight’ At The Supreme Court?
In one email to fellow Trump-supporting attorney Kenneth Chesebro in the weeks after the election, Eastman described how there was a “heated fight underway” among the Supreme Court justices on whether to hear arguments disputing the 2020 Election results.
There have been questions as to whether Eastman may have heard about the apparent dispute between SCOTUS judges from Ginni Thomas, due to her relationship with Clarence Thomas.
The panel may look to determine how Eastman, who once served as clerk for Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court, knew about the apparent “heated” debate in their questioning of Ginni Thomas.
Did Your Husband Share Your Election Concerns?
One of the reasons there were calls for Ginni Thomas to be subpoenaed to give testimony to the January 6 panel was due to her relationship with the Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
It is unclear if Ginni spoke of her desire to overturn the 2020 Election with her husband, who would have influence over election-related decisions by the court.
Judge Thomas was the sole dissenting vote when the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s attempt to block the release of some presidential documents to the January 6 panel.
What Did Your ‘Release the Kraken’ Text to Mark Meadows Mean?
Included in the text messages and emails from Ginni Thomas to Trump’s inner circle and election officials were phrases and conspiracy theories linked to QAnon.
In one text to Meadows, Ginni Thomas urges “release the Kraken and save us from the left taking America down” in an apparent reference to a phrase used by QAnon-supporting attorney Sidney Powell in her attempts to overturn the 2020 Election.
In the weeks after the election, Powell promised to “release the Kraken” in reference to lawsuits which would expose how Trump lost the election due to widespread voter fraud.
The phrase was then frequently used by the far-right and conspiracy theorists who eagerly awaited the release of the lawsuits Powell claimed would prove Trump won the 2020 Election.
Instead, the highly anticipated lawsuits contained no meaningful evidence of voter fraud, and were widely mocked for containing a slew of grammatical and spelling mistakes, as well as basic legal errors.
Can You Explain Your Emails To Lawmakers?
It was previously reported that Ginni Thomas sent an email to Republican Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers and congresswoman Shawnna Bolick telling them it was their “Constitutional duty” to install a “clean slate of Electors” who would be willing to falsely declare Trump the winner in 2020.
It later emerged that Thomas had sent identical emails to more than two dozen Arizona lawmakers urging them to “stand strong in the face of political and media pressure” and choose Electors who would not declare Biden the winner of the election, as well as at least two more in Wisconsin.
The emails were sent days after Biden was declared the winner of the election.
The panel may ask who else was involved in writing the messages, and just how much Trump was aware of the demands.
The House Select Committee has been contacted for comment.
